THE CASCADING MENTORSHIP MODEL

  • THE CASCADING MENTORSHIP MODEL

What It Is

In 2026, OHI introduced a structural innovation to its mentorship programme: the Cascading Mentorship Model. Rather than recruiting a new cohort of mentees from outside the network, the Call for Applications for Cohort 4 was limited to past mentees of Cohorts 1, 2, and 3, who could apply to become mentors themselves.

Seven former mentees were selected by the Core Team to serve as first-generation cascading mentors. Each of these seven then recruited their own group of 5–10 new mentees, establishing independent mentorship programmes operating under the OHI banner — expanding the network without requiring proportional growth of the original 15-member Core Team.

Why We Built It

OHI’s earlier evaluations, and the broader literature on African research capacity-building, pointed to a consistent finding: many training programmes measure success by attendance, not by output. OHI was built from the start to measure success by publications, registered reviews, and completed studies. The Cascading Model extends that philosophy into sustainability — training people not just to research, but to mentor.

It also directly addresses a resourcing constraint common to research capacity-building in low-resource settings: a small, fixed core team cannot indefinitely absorb growing numbers of external mentees without diluting mentorship quality. By training mentors from within, OHI can grow its reach while preserving the intensity and quality of guidance each mentee receives.

How It Works

1
Eligibility
Only former OHI mentees (Cohorts 1–3) could apply to become Cohort 4 mentors.
4
Output target
Each mentorship programme is required to produce a minimum of 5–10 completed manuscripts within a 12-month period, scaled to the number of mentees recruited.
2
Selection
The Core Team selected seven mentees to become mentors
5
Publication pathway
All manuscripts are expected to be submitted for peer-reviewed publication
3
Recruitment
Each of the seven mentors independently recruited 5–10 new mentees.
6
Network integration
New mentees recruited under this model are not isolated — they are connected to the broader OHI Network and gain access to the original Core Team once they complete their 12-month programme.
The Seven Cascading Research Clusters (Cohort 4)
PROJECT MENTOR
AFRICA WRITE–OH Project Abel Chukwuemeka
PROFER Project Omorinola Afolabi
NEXTGEN–OHI Project Adebola Ehizele
POHRE Project Abodunrin Olunike
MPRIME Project Clifford Duodu
M-ORAL Project Omosola Bolarin
Research Development Hub (RDH) Project Oluwakemi Ojulowo

Each cluster is actively developing study proposals and manuscripts, engaging researchers across multiple institutions. Notably, the AFRICA WRITE–OH Project and the PROFER Project each have 12 named researchers, while the NEXTGEN–OHI Project has 15 named researchers — together forming one of the largest coordinated transdisciplinary oral health research efforts on the continent.

Why It Matters

The Cascading Mentorship Model represents an innovation not widely documented elsewhere in the African research-mentoring literature. Similar online mentoring programmes for African research projects have historically reported completion rates below 35%, often hampered by unclear roles and weak communication structures. OHI’s model is designed to counter those failure modes by keeping mentorship close, output-driven, and rooted in mentors who have themselves recently succeeded as mentees.

As a sustainability strategy, the model reduces OHI’s reliance on its original Core Team while allowing the network to keep growing — without diluting mentorship quality or requiring proportional increases in core funding.

Note: As of the most recent reporting, OHI has not yet published data on manuscript completion rates from the seven new cascading mentorship programmes — this will be an important marker of the model’s success over the coming year.
